5 Tips to Make Sure Your Organic Baby Shampoo Works Well

  1. Decide about fragrance: Most organic shampoos and body washes you will find will not have an added artificial fragrance, however some will have essential oils like lavender added in. Some children with very sensitive skin can be irritated by these oils, so if this is the case, go with a product that is strictly fragrance free.
  2. Understand any skin conditions your child has: If your child has issues such as cradle cap, dandruff, or eczema, keep that in mind when selecting a formula. Most organic baby washes are meant to soothe irritated skin, but some focus specifically on certain scalp or skin issues. Products with calendula, for example, is great for solving cradle cap.
  3. Check for a tear free formula: Let’s face it- bath time can get a little out of control at times! If your child enjoys splashing around, you especially want to make sure that you are selecting a tear free formula that won’t burn when getting in their eyes. It is inevitable that this will happen at some point, so this is a major point you will want to look for when selecting a product.
  4. Select between a lathering/bubbling and low lather product: A lot of natural products are not going to lather or bubble like you might be used to. It tends to take chemicals in body washes to produce large amounts of bubbles and suds. However, some organic products will still produce some amount of lathering and bubbles. If your child loves bubble baths (and what child doesn’t?) consider getting a product that will produce bubbles. Low lather products are perfect for shampoo, but consider a lathering product for a body wash.
  5. Soap vs. soap free: Any product with soap runs the risk of drying out skin. If your child already suffers from dry skin, consider a soap-free product that cleans naturally with other ingredients. If you do select a product with soap, make sure it has other moisturizing ingredients, such as aloe vera or coconut oil, that will counteract the soap.

Product Criteria of Evaluation

Price is always a major determining factor for us when selecting products. We understand that many parents are working with a tight budget, and for that reason we try to select products with a variety of price points. Overall, baby shampoos are cheaper items compared to larger items like cribs and car seats, however, this is a product you will have to regularly purchase, meaning the relatively cheap price can add up quickly. Consider Aveeno on this list if you are looking for a truly affordable product that is still all natural.

User Ratings

If users aren’t happy with a product, we are hesitant to select it for our list. When it comes to shampoos, we were looking for products that parents loved using and felt safe using for their child. Other factors such as the quality of the formula, its effectiveness at soothing skin, and it not burning if getting in a child’s eyes were also important.

Manufacturer’s Reputation

As usual, a manufacturer’s reputation is important when determining products for our list. In this industry, safety is of utmost importance. This is especially true for shampoos and body washes, as they are directly coming in contact with your baby.

Ease of Use

Ease of use is not a major factor when it comes to shampoo products, but is still something we take into consideration. Things like bottle shape and the type of dispenser are important and determine if its easy or difficult to get shampoo out, however, it is less important in this situation than other factors.

How is a Baby Shampoo Different from Your Usual One?

baby shampoo ingredients

There is an entire world of different products that are available out there that are marketed specifically for use with babies. From baby lotion and baby oil to baby powder and baby diaper cream, they have it all. Sometimes, you may find yourself wondering what exactly makes those products marketed specifically for use with babies different from other products that are targeted for adults. After all, shampoo is shampoo, right? Well, when it comes to the differences between regular shampoo for adults and baby shampoo, you may be surprised to learn that they are actually pretty different.

The Make-Up of Baby Shampoo and Regular Shampoo

The big difference between regular adult shampoo and the shampoos that are marketed as baby products specifically is the ingredients used in the shampoo to actually clean the hair. Regular adult shampoo typically uses an ingredient called sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate in order to clean the hair. Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate are detergents as well as something called surfactants. They work by breaking the surface tension between your hair and oils and dirt. Both sodium lauryl sulfate as well as sodium laureth sulfate are fairly harsh cleaning agents which is why they are not used in shampoos made specifically for babies.

baby shampoo ingredients

Instead of using things like sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate in shampoos that are designed specifically for babies, surfactants that are much milder are used as the cleaning agent instead. The milder surfactants used to make baby shampoos are called amphoteric surfactants. They still work similarly to the same way as the harsher versions used in shampoos designed for adult use, but they are much gentler and milder than the cleaning agents that are typically used in the shampoos that are designed for adults to use.

How the Different Ingredients Effect the Way the Shampoo Works

Obviously, with different ingredients, especially with different cleaning agents in them, shampoos designed for adults and shampoos designed for babies both work differently. There are several different major differences in the effectiveness of each different type of shampoo. Probably the biggest difference in the shampoos that are made for adults and those that are designed for use with babies is how effectively they are able to clean the hair.

Shampoos that are designed for adults are extremely effective at cleaning the hair. The harsher cleaning agents that are used in adult shampoos are very good at removing dirt and oil from the hair. These harsher cleaning agents also happen to do a very good job at producing a large amount of lather when used. This can help with the cleaning process slightly, but the main benefit of lather is actually in our heads. The lather that is produced when using adult shampoos can make you feel as though your hair is getting clean even though the lather itself has little to do with the actual cleaning properties of the shampoo.

The harsher cleaning agents in adult shampoos may be effective, but there is an important reason that these harsh cleaning agents are not used in shampoos that are designed specifically for use with babies. Not only can these harsh cleaning agents irritate a baby’s sensitive skin, but as most adults know from experience at some point or another, they can cause severe irritation and even pain if they get into the eyes. For these reasons, it is much safer to avoid things like sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate in products that are designed specifically for babies.

The cleaning agents that are used in shampoos that are designed specifically for babies are much milder and gentler, but that doesn’t mean that they are ineffective. In fact, some may even say that the ingredients used in shampoos that are designed for adults are almost too effective. Adult shampoos work so well at removing dirt and oil from the hair that they can leave the hair and even the scalp excessively dry. Shampoos that are designed for use with babies, however, are able to clean the hair, removing dirt and oil without drying out the hair or skin.

The shampoos that are made for babies are perfect for them since babies, especially very young babies, tend to have less dirty hair in general making it easier to clean without the harsher cleaning agents found in adult shampoos. Some adults even may opt to use baby shampoos on their own hair rather than typical adult shampoos.

This can be good if you’re looking for something gentler that won’t dry your hair out or burn your eyes, but since it may not be quite as effective as the shampoos designed for adults, you may need to wash your hair, rinse it, and then repeat in order to achieve desired results if you have very much dirt or oil in your hair. Also, since the shampoos that are designed for babies are milder and gentler they can actually leave your hair feeling softer than shampoo made for adults.

Baby Shampoos Are the Safest Choice for Babies

Overall, there are some pretty considerable differences when it comes to shampoos that are designed specifically for babies and regular shampoos that are made for adults. Adult shampoos are extremely effective, but can be dangerous and irritating for a baby and are unnecessary for a baby. On the other hand, shampoos made for babies are gentle and clean adequately for babies’ hair. There can certainly be reasons that an adult may choose to use baby shampoo for their own hair, but you should never use regular adult shampoo for your baby’s hair.

The Toxic Ingredients to Steer Clear of in Baby Shampoos

In the world that we live in today, we are surrounded by chemicals and toxins. They are in many of the products that we love and use regularly and many times, we may not even realize it. It is not even remotely uncommon for our cleaning products and even our body care products to have dangerous substances in them that are known to have harmful effects.

You would probably think that the products that companies are designing specifically for our babies would be safer and not contain any potentially dangerous toxic ingredients. Unfortunately, that is not the case and it is very common and normal for certain toxic ingredients to be used in the products marketed towards our precious babies. In order to protect our little ones, it is important to be as informed as possible and understand what things to look out for.

There are potentially dangerous ingredients used in all sorts of different baby products, but one particular baby product that has come under much scrutiny because of some of the potentially dangerous ingredients regularly used in it is baby shampoos.

The first potentially dangerous ingredient is Quaternium-15. Quaternium-15 is used as a preservative in things like baby shampoo as well as various other products. It acts to prevent bacteria from growing since the baby shampoo is water-based and carries a risk of bacteria growing without some kind of preservative.

Quaternium-15 releases formaldehyde when used and formaldehyde is very well-known to be a dangerous substance. The products that contain these things have only very small amounts that should not cause any adverse effects with only one use, but if you are using them regularly overtime, there can be a build-up of the dangerous substances which can lead to problems. Formaldehyde is known to be very toxic and is even a known carcinogen in humans.

1,4-Dioxane is a known carcinogen that is surprisingly common in shampoos, even shampoos designed specifically for use with babies. It is known to be dangerous and can potentially even be a cause of cancer as it is a carcinogen. Possibly the worst part of this particular substance being in the shampoo that is designed for babies is that it doesn’t even have to be included on the ingredient label and probably isn’t in most cases.

The 1,4-Dioxane does not have to be included in the ingredient list on product labels because it is not directly added to the products. Instead, 1,4-Dioxane is created in a reaction of ethoxylation that occurs between other ingredients used in the baby shampoo. The purpose of the ethoxylation is ironically to create less harsh products, but it has other unfortunate side effects like the creation of the 1,4-Dioxane.

Always Be Cautious

It is sad that we live in a world where companies put aside genuine good values in order to profit off of us and our precious babies. We should not even have to question whether a shampoo that is marketed specifically for us to use with our sweet and sensitive babies is safe for them or not. All products that are made for our children should be made with nothing but the safest and best ingredients available. Unfortunately, that just is not the case.

It is our job as parents to do our absolute best to be highly informed on things like this that can affect the health of our children. Always be careful about what shampoos as well as other products that you choose for your baby. Do your research and always check the ingredients of any shampoo or other product that you buy to use on your little one.

Are organic shampoos worth the money?

Yes! It is true that organic shampoos will, on average, cost more than non-organic products. However, the slight increase in price is well worth it. Not only do these products contain natural ingredients, more importantly, they are free from potentially harmful chemicals and ingredients like parabens, phosphates, formaldehyde, and more.

Do they smell good?

Some people worry that organic products won’t smell good, but that is not the case. Some products will not have much of a scent, but it is not a bad smell. Others are naturally scented with essential oils like lavender or vanilla. They may have slightly less of a powerful scent than non-organic products, but they are much safer for your child, and it is worth it. Fragrance in products is often times very irritating to children’s skin.

Can they help cure cradle cap?

Yes it can! Many organic shampoos contain natural ingredients that will specifically target skin issues such as cradle cap. Calendula in particular is an ingredient to look for that is a natural anti-inflammatory and is known to help clear up cradle cap.

Can you use an organic shampoo as both a shampoo and a body wash?

Absolutely. These products are made to be used as both a shampoo and body wash. They will cleanse skin and hair, leaving both moisturized and soft. The ingredients enough are gentle enough to use on both hair and skin, and gentle enough to use every day.

Decision Time

There you have it! The ten best organic baby shampoos on the market today. With all of these products you know you are getting a product that will be much safer than others that are filled with chemicals and other ingredients that aren’t safe for your baby.
