If you are currently shopping for a crib for your baby, you already know how many options are out there. It can be overwhelming! A crib is a necessary item but that doesn’t mean it is easy to make a decision and find the one that is right for your child and for you. In particular, convertible cribs have become very popular lately. They get a lot of attention as being the best option for parents to purchase. They tend to be a bit more expensive, but worth it in the long run. At least, that’s what a lot of people say. Is that the truth? It depends!

Are Convertible Cribs Worth Your Money?

There are several different factors to keep in mind when purchasing a crib and deciding whether or not to buy a convertible crib. Here are some tips to keep in mind so you can decide if it is worth the investment or not.

Convertible cribs tend to cost more money initially, which is why it is good to think through the decision entirely before spending the money and not being sure it is what you want.

Are you planning to have more kids?

This tends to be a deciding factor for a lot of parents. If you are planning to have more kids, you might shy away from the money of a convertible crib and instead purchase a regular crib that you can use for additional children you might have. If you purchase a convertible crib and convert it to a toddler bed and then get pregnant, you would have to decide if you want to convert the toddler bed back to a crib and purchase your toddler a bed, or do you leave the convertible crib and purchase an additional crib?

If you are only planning to have one child, or if you are currently planning to only have one additional child, this might be a great option for you, as it is the only purchase you will have to make (in terms of bedding, anyways).

How much space is in your child’s room?

If you live in a small house, or if your child’s room is small, you need to consider the dimensions of the crib as it converts. Cribs are always relatively small, but some convert to a full sized bed with a headboard and footboard. That takes up a lot of space! If you prefer your child to be in a smaller bed so they have more room to play, be sure if you do purchase a convertible crib that it converts to a single bed and not a full sized.

are convertible cribs worth the money

If you can only find cribs that convert to full sized beds, consider instead purchasing a regular crib and research smaller toddler and single beds to purchase as your child grows and approaches that stage in life.

How active is your child?

Is your child the type to try and crawl out of their crib? Some children are simply more active and adventurous than others. In this case, a convertible crib might be right for you! Most of these cribs have the option to add certain safety features like guardrails or stabilizers to help keep the adventurous ones safe in bed. Or, if your child has slept in a bed and has the issue of falling out of bed, a convertible crib might be a good option in order to use those safety features.

With a convertible crib, you are paying for these extra features. If you don’t think you want or need these features, it is likely not worth it for you to spend the money just to have them sit around and not be used.

Purchase all parts required to convert

convertible crib parts

Should you decide you want a convertible crib, be sure to plan ahead and purchase all the materials you need at one time. The main downside to convertible cribs is that the require certain other parts or accessories to fully convert the crib. This may be larger mattresses, guardrails, conversion tool kits, and more. Depending on the specific model you purchase, you may have several additional items you need that increase the overall price a lot.

Keep in mind that many children can easily transition from sleeping in a crib to sleeping in a single or full sized bed. You always have the option to add guard rails to these beds as well, so a convertible crib is not the only option you have. While a convertible crib gives you the additional toddler bed size option, it is not a necessity.

Take a look at final costs before making the decision and be sure to purchase parts. Many parents make the mistake of purchasing a convertible crib without the other parts. Once they go to convert the crib, they can’t find a store to purchase the parts, and the convertible aspect of the crib ends up being useless and a waste of money. Don’t make that mistake!

Wrapping Up

With these tips in mind, you should be able to make a more informed decision about purchasing a convertible crib. These cribs sometimes make a lot of sense and are the perfect option for some families, but for others, not so much. Keep in mind your specific situation and you’ll make the right decision in no time. Convertible cribs are not bad, and if you have the money, you always have the option to purchase the convertible crib and make the decision about converting it later. You can always choose to just leave it as a crib. The choice is yours!
